Ecological Intelligence

Ecological Intelligence

by Nikodemis –

Poet, scientist and psychiatrist Ian McCallum wrote a magical book in 2005 called Ecological Intelligence – Rediscovering ourselves in NatureHe dedicated it to “three strange angels—
the naturalist, the scientist, and the poet in all of us”.

This is how it starts:

Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place,
but a pattern of soul
where every tree, every bird and beast
is a soul maker?

Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place
but a moving feast of stars,
footprints, scales and beginnings?

Since when
did we become afraid of the night
and that only the bright stars count?
Or that our moon is not a moon
unless it is full?

By whose command
were the animals
through groping fingers,
one for each hand,
reduced to the big and little five?

Have we forgotten
that every creature is within us
carried by tides
of Earthly blood
and that we named them?

Have we forgotten
that wilderness is not a place,
but a season
and that we are in its
final hour?

On his present day website at , Ian McCallum says,

“We have to stop speaking about the Earth being in need of healing. The Earth doesn’t need healing. We do. It is our task to rediscover ourselves in Nature. It is an individual choice. We either continue to believe that someone or something else will rescue us, show us the easy way, or even take the hard path on our behalf, or we choose the opposite – we take it upon ourselves. We take the hard path, each one of us in our own way and we do it gladly. And where does that path begin? It begins exactly where we are right now, when we look up at the world as a mirror, when we discover that our sense of freedom and authenticity is linked to the well being and authenticity of others – including the animals, trees and the land.”

Forget IQ and EQ. Get real. Get EI. Get Ecological Intelligence.

I rest my case.
